What I learnt today: taking things easy

Today I travelled to Brighton because I’m attending Indie Web Camp this weekend. I flew in today (on Friday) and I’m leaving on Monday. So if I count the days of arrival and departure that would be four days, two of which I’m out of office and not able to do any client work.

I used to beat me up over this a lot. Up until recently I couldn’t really enjoy travelling because I always thought I should be working instead.

But today I realised that there’s nothing wrong with taking the time to travel, especially if it is for the purpose of learning new things. And the client world didn’t go down either. Sure, I had to deal with some email but nothing so serious that it couldn’t be dealt with when I’m back. I guess I need to take things easy once in a while. That’s what I learnt today.

What I learnt today: low energy work

This morning I couldn’t really focus on what I should have been doing. Be it designing something or writing code, sometimes my brain just refuses to put all it’s energy towards the task at hand.

So I decided to do low energy work instead. I went to the bank to get British Pounds for my trip to Indie Web Camp in Brighton tomorrow, bought some supplies and did some housekeeping in my office. In the afternoon I was productive again.

Being a morning person it usually is the other way round: I’m very productive in the morning and I do low energy work in the afternoon. But today I discovered it works just as well reciprocally. That’s what I learnt today.

What I learnt today: showing up

I was really knackered today. Maybe because of the current heatwave or maybe because I didn’t sleep very well (or both). When I got up this morning I already had the feeling that concentration would be an issue.

But I got down to work and did my best. When it was time to call it a day, I checked my time tracking and realised that it wasn’t that bad after all. I guess it’s true what people say: showing up is half the job. At least that’s what I learnt today.
